Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord

Image
Holy Week begins with Palm Sunday. The liturgy has two parts: 1) commemoration of Jesus' entry into Jerusalem with the blessing of palms and gospel reading; 2) proclamation of the Passion. The mood shifts dramatically. Acclaiming Jesus as King of the Jews gives way to his suffering and death, contrasting God’s constancy in Jesus and human inconsistency; God’s fidelity and human infidelity.

2nd Rite of Reconciliation in Holy Week—1 April 7:30pm

Image
The Sacrament of Reconciliation Rite 2 will be held at 7.30pm this Wednesday, 1 April. It comprises communal preparation and thanksgiving. Penitents approach a priest individually to confess their sins and receive absolution. Rite 2 expresses and witnesses to our shared faith in God’s merciful love. It is an opportunity to encourage and support one another in our shared experiences as sinners and saved. For Rite 2 to work well, penitents need to be succinct in confessing their sins. It is not the time for long lists of sins nor seeking advice. To this end, priests will stand to hear confessions. The confessionals will not be used. Please help make this liturgy an inspiring event.

Celebration of the Lord’s Passion: Good Friday 3pm (3 April)

Image
The Celebration of the Lord’s Passion has three parts. The Liturgy of the Word begins with the last of four poems from the Prophet Isaiah about a mysterious Suffering Servant whom Jesus embodies. The second reading from the Letter to the Hebrews presents Jesus as the High Priest who identifies with our humanity, particularly suffering. The Gospel is the Passion according to St John. The Liturgy of the Word ends with an extended Prayer of the Faithful. In the Veneration of the Cross, a large cross is carried through the church accompanied by a sung responsorial psalm. The congregation process to venerate it personally. In the final part, Holy Communion is distributed with hosts consecrated at the Mass of the Lord’s Supper.
