Season of Advent

This first Sunday of Advent marks the beginning of a new Church year. Advent comes from the Latin advenio, “to come”. Like Lent, Advent is a “purple” season of waiting and preparing for God to enter history in the baby Jesus of Nazareth. It confronts the commercialism of Christmas by calling the faithful to quiet reflection, repentance and prayer. Expectation grows as successive candles in the Advent wreath are lit each week.
