Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church – 9 June

The Blessed Virgin Mary was honoured as Mother of the Church from the 4th century CE. The title reappeared in 1895 in an encyclical by Pope Leo XIII before featuring in Church docu-ments during and after Vatican II. Pope St Paul VI gave it official status in 1964. Pope St John Paul II included it in the Catechism of the Catholic Church and Pope Francis declared it a Memorial to be celebrated on the Monday after Pentecost Sunday.
