Dedication of the Lateran Basilica – 9 November

The Feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica today highlights the role of the Basilica of St John Lateran in Rome as the Cathedral of the Diocese of Rome and Cathedra (official “seat”) of the Pope as Bishop of Rome since the 4th century. It acknowledges the vocation of the Pope as Vicar (first representative) of Christ on earth and calls on the faithful worldwide to pray for him.
