Feast of Candlemas — 2 Feb

The Feast of Candlemas, which dates from the 7th century, is held on Monday, 2 February, the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord. Parishioners and friends are invited to bring a suitable candle to 7am or 9.15am Mass (offered especially for the day), during which it will be solemnly blessed with others as acknowledgement that Christ is our light in the darkness. Participants are encouraged to take their blessed candle home to be lit on special occasions during the year, such as anniversaries of Baptism, First Communion, Confirmation and Marriage, birthdays and graduations. In the wake of the Bondi tragedy last year, we are called to be ambassadors for Christ (1 Cor 5:20), the Light of the World (Jn 8:12). Candles need to be substantial, free standing and according to tradition, made from beeswax. The candle could become part of a sacred space in the family home.
