St Josephine Bakhita — 8 February


Josephine Bakhita was born about 1869 in Darfur (Sudan). At 9, she was kidnapped by Arab traders, mistreated and disfigured. She was left with the Canossian Sisters in Venice. In 1890, she was baptised Margaret Josephine Fortunata (“Bakhita” in Arabic). She made final vows in 1896 and undertook domestic duties until her death in 1947. She is patron of the Sudan, survivors of trafficking and Go Make Disciples, the Archdiocesan Mission Plan.
