2nd Rite of Scrutiny
On this 4th Sunday of Lent, the second of three Rites of Scrutiny is celebrated during 9.30am Mass as part of the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA). Year A readings are proclaimed, featuring the healing of the man born blind (Jn 9:1-41). The Scrutiny Rite comprises prayers of intercession for the Elect (preparing for Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist during Easter Vigil Mass) and a Prayer of Exorcism, in which God is asked to inspire them to turn away from sin, so to embrace the Gospel more freely and wholeheartedly. The Priest uses the sacred gesture of Laying Hands (Lk 4:40; Ac 13:13; 19:6; 28:8). The Elect then depart from the assembly with their companions to reflect on the gospel and their experience. While they are the primary subjects of the Rite, all worshippers are encouraged to participate in solidarity with them by reflecting upon and renewing our own faith commitment. In this way, the public action of the Elect is a witness for the whole faith community.
