Celebration of the Lord’s Passion: Good Friday 3pm (3 April)
The Celebration of the Lord’s Passion has three parts.
- The Liturgy of the Word begins with the last of four poems from the Prophet Isaiah about a mysterious Suffering Servant whom Jesus embodies. The second reading from the Letter to the Hebrews presents Jesus as the High Priest who identifies with our humanity, particularly suffering. The Gospel is the Passion according to St John. The Liturgy of the Word ends with an extended Prayer of the Faithful.
- In the Veneration of the Cross, a large cross is carried through the church accompanied by a sung responsorial psalm. The congregation process to venerate it personally.
- In the final part, Holy Communion is distributed with hosts consecrated at the Mass of the Lord’s Supper.
