Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord

The Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord is celebrated traditionally on the fortieth day after Easter Sunday (Thursday of the 6th Week of Easter). The Ascension is recorded in the gospels of Ss Mark (Mk 16:19-20) and Luke (Lk 24:50-53) and in St Luke’s Acts of the Apostles (Ac 1:6-11). It marks the end of Jesus’ earthly ministry and with Pentecost (celebrated next Sunday), the birth of the Church as the Body of Christ. In many countries including Australia, the Solemnity is transferred from the Thursday to the following 7th Sunday of Easter.
